The 55th episode of the Literary Club’s Literary Lens featured an engaging review of The House in the Cerulean Sea, presented by Sana Zainudheen, a B.Ed. student of the 2023–2025 English batch at MITC Ponnani.
TJ Klune’s enchanting novel, often described as a “warm hug in book form,” unfolds the story of Linus Baker, a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. When he’s unexpectedly assigned to a classified mission at an orphanage housing six extraordinary children, he discovers much more than bureaucratic duty—he discovers love, acceptance, and the meaning of home.
Sana beautifully highlighted the book’s themes of inclusion, identity, compassion, and chosen family. Her presentation touched on the gentle humor, emotional depth, and the magical realism that makes the novel both thought-provoking and heartwarming. The character of Arthur Parnassus and his protective love for the children were brought into sharp focus, illustrating how the novel advocates for empathy in a world quick to judge.
The session concluded with a lively discussion where participants reflected on the power of kindness and how fantasy literature can mirror social truths. Sana’s thoughtful narration and personal reflections added a vibrant energy to the session.
