A five-day workshop on “Understanding the Self” was conducted for the fourth semester B.Ed. students of the 2024–2026 batch at MI Training College, Ponnani, from 2nd to 6th March 2026, as part of EDU 402 – Course on EPC 4: Understanding the Self.
The workshop was led by Dr. Ramitha Rahman P.A, who facilitated a series of interactive and reflective sessions aimed at enhancing self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and personal growth among student teachers.
🔹 Workshop Highlights
Workshop 1: A Significant Life Experience
The first workshop focused on developing a reflective understanding of students’ aspirations and expectations as prospective teachers. Participants were guided to write a reflective statement based on their learning experiences in the course and critically evaluate themselves in relation to the teaching profession.
In the first phase, students delivered individual presentations where they reflected on the best teacher who had influenced them and shared their personal concept of an ideal teacher. They also conducted a SWOT analysis to identify their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats as student teachers. Additionally, they presented their future plans and goals to develop themselves into effective and inspiring teachers.
In the second phase, students engaged in report writing based on the presentations and discussions. The report included the key highlights of the session, lessons learned from sharing diverse experiences, and a clear plan for their future professional growth. The report was completed and submitted on the same day as part of the evaluation process
Workshop 2: Gender and Upbringing
The second workshop focused on understanding gender roles and the influence of upbringing. Students were divided into two groups and shared their personal ‘gendered’ experiences, including significant life events and perspectives as boys or girls. The activity encouraged reflection and helped students suggest ways to address gender issues as future teachers.
A panel discussion was conducted by merging both groups, with panel members Maya Mohan V M, Aneesa Nargees V A, Farsana, Fathimma Shameema C, Hudha Mujeeb K, and Ramseena C. The panel discussed solutions to gender-related issues with active participation from the audience, while teachers moderated and concluded the session.
Students prepared a report highlighting individual experiences and key points from the discussion, which was submitted the following day as part of the assessment
In the third phase, students were instructed to prepare a report based on the workshop. They noted key points during the session, focusing on individual experiences and highlights of the discussion. The report was assigned as homework and was to be submitted the next day before 9:30 AM as part of the assessment.
Workshop 3: Deconstructing Advertisements in Audiovisual Media
The third workshop focused on analyzing and understanding the impact of advertisements in audiovisual media. The session began with an expert talk on the psychology of advertisements and the expanding role of advertising in contemporary life.
Students then shared their favourite advertisements and discussed their influence on their lives, followed by a brief conclusion by the teacher. Another session highlighted how technology, creativity, and imagination combine to create targeted commercials, along with the analysis of selected advertisements.
As a group activity, students were divided into teams of six and tasked with creating the script for an effective advertisement. The workshop concluded with the submission of group-wise advertisement scripts as part of the assessment.
Workshop 4: Theatre for Awareness of Self and Others
The fourth workshop focused on developing awareness of the body, self, and others through theatre-based activities. The session began by sensitizing students about their inherent potentialities through various interactive exercises. It also included activities on refreshing the body and mind through yoga, promoting relaxation and self-regulation. The workshop concluded with report writing based on the experiences and learning outcomes
Workshop 5: Art and Education
The fifth workshop emphasized the importance of art in education. It began with an expert talk on art-integrated education and its role in enhancing teaching–learning processes. Students were then divided into groups of six to construct an art-integrated lesson plan. Each student prepared and submitted an individual lesson plan based on the group activity as part of the assessment.
✅ Conclusion
The workshop provided a meaningful platform for students to explore their inner selves, understand social realities, and develop essential life skills. It was highly effective in promoting self-awareness, critical thinking, creativity, and interpersonal understanding among student teachers, aligning with the objectives of the EPC course.
