An Anti-Drug Awareness Programme was conducted at M.I. Training College, Ponnani, on 2 September 2026, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the College Seminar Hall. The programme was jointly organised by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), NSS Unit 344, and NERKKOOTTAM Club. The programme aimed to create awareness among future teachers about their role and responsibility in preventing drug use among children and students.
The Chief Guest and Resource Person of the programme was Mr. Shihab P. T., Counsellor, Government Children’s Home, Thavanur & JJB, Malappuram.
The session primarily focused on the role of teachers in preventing drug use among children and students. Instead of concentrating on the different types of drugs and their effects, the resource person highlighted practical ways through which teachers can identify, support, and guide students who may be vulnerable to substance use.
Mr. Shihab P. T. emphasised the importance of teachers observing and understanding changes in students’ behaviour, learning habits, academic performance, and social interactions. Such changes may indicate that a student is experiencing emotional, social, or personal difficulties. Early identification can enable teachers to provide timely guidance and appropriate support.
The resource person also stressed that children facing such difficulties should not be blamed, punished, or isolated. Instead, they should be approached with care, empathy, understanding, and patience. Teachers can play a significant role by creating a supportive classroom environment, encouraging students to communicate their concerns, and helping them access appropriate counselling and professional assistance whenever necessary.
The session highlighted that a teacher’s responsibility extends beyond the transmission of academic knowledge. A teacher is also a guide, mentor, role model, and support system for students. By maintaining positive relationships with learners and being attentive to their needs, teachers can contribute significantly to the prevention of drug use and the protection of the mental and social well-being of children.
The programme was highly informative and relevant to the student teachers of M.I. Training College. It helped the participants gain a better understanding of their responsibilities as future teachers in preventing drug use, identifying students who may require support, and promoting a safe, healthy, and supportive educational environment.
The programme concluded successfully with the active participation of the student teachers and faculty members.
