MI Training College, Ponnani, celebrated Onam with great fervor and enthusiasm on August
29, 2025. The campus was adorned with festive decorations, and students and faculty
members came together to partake in a day filled with traditional games, cultural programs,
and a grand Onam Sadya.
The celebrations commenced at 9:30 AM with the inauguration of the big Pookalam (floral
carpet) making. Students from different departments showcased their creativity and artistic
skills by designing intricate and colorful Pookalam, which added to the festive ambiance.
Following this, the campus witnessed a spectacular “Mega Thiruvathira,” where a large
group of students especially the first-year students performed the traditional
Thiruvathirakali dance, captivating the audience with their graceful movements.
The forenoon session was packed with a variety of fun-filled games and competitions,
including:
- Balloon Breaking: Participants competed to burst balloons in a given time, leading to much laughter and friendly competition.
- Cup and Straw: This game tested the participants’ dexterity and speed as they had to move cups using only a straw.
- Cup and Balloon: A unique game that required participants to balance a cup on a balloon while navigating an obstacle course.
- Cultural dance: cultural dances performed by second year students.
Following the games, a traditional and delicious Onam Sadya was served, bringing everyone
together to enjoy a feast of various traditional vegetarian dishes like pulinji, kalan, avial,
pickle,Elasseri, thoren, rasam,payasam sambar, pappadam and banana chips etc. The Sadya
was a highlight of the day, reflecting the rich culinary traditions of Kerala.
The afternoon session continued the celebrations with more exciting events:
- Bun Eating Competition: A hilarious competition where participants had to eat a bun as quickly as possible without using their hands, much to the amusement of the spectators.
- Sundariku Pottu Thodal (Blindfolded Bindi-Placing): A classic Onam game where blindfolded participants attempted to place a bindi on a picture of a woman’ forehead, resulting in many comical moments.
- Uriyadi (Pot Breaking): The day’s events concluded with the thrilling Uriyadi competition, where blindfolded participants tried to break a suspended earthen pot using a stick.
The Onam celebration at MI Training College, Ponnani, was a resounding success. It was not
only a day of fun and games but also a beautiful representation of the college’s commitment
to preserving and celebrating cultural traditions. The event fostered a sense of community
and provided a memorable experience for everyone involved, leaving them with cherished
memories of a vibrant and joyous Onam.
